I studied Scandinavian Languages and General Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam, where I received my PhD in 1997 on a thesis entitled The history of the genitive in Swedish – a case study in degrammaticalization. In the years that followed I worked as a teacher and researcher at the Universities of Amsterdam and Groningen. In 2013 I accepted a position as professor of Scandinavian Linguistics at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
